Abstract

A ritual called floral salute is performed for a young man in the military who died in an accident during training. The ritual is a military tribute at the grave of the deceased and is combined with a visit to the family. The impact of the situation is complicated by a recently concluded investigation into the accident in which issues of guilt played a large role. The case shows how the performance of ritual is part of the chaplain's work and how the chaplain provides `baseline' care for all those involved.
