The Trouble with Achar: Preliminary Studies for a Commentary on the OG Version of Joshua 7

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapter Academicpeer-review

Abstract

This paper examines the many small differences between the Hebrew text of Joshua 7 as transmitted in the Masoretic Text (MT) and the Old Greek translation (OG) of that chapter. Whereas some scholars are inclined to attribute these differences to a Hebrew Vorlage of OG that differed from MT, this paper argues on the basis of the distinct Greek vocabulary that the changes are due to the interpretative tendencies of the Greek translator. As such this paper offers a contribution to the ongoing project of a full-scale commentary to the Septuagint in the SBL Septuagint Commentary series.
