Description

Interpretation of the meaning of the prohibition of tattoos in Leviticus 19:28. An investigation of related texts shows that this text does not prohibit all tattooing, but only when related to the veneration of Baal and other gods, especially during the specific mourning rituals for the god Baal. Tattoos were used for slaves, but also could be used by free people, as examples from ancient Egypt prove.
