Description
A recent scholarly and scientific article has demonstrated that the ink of the so-called “distigmai” in Codex Vaticanus was purified, confirming that these markings cannot date earlier than the sixteenth century. This finding makes it crucial to further explore a prominent hypothesis regarding their origin, namely that the “distigmai” were added during the exchange between Sepúlveda and Erasmus on the Greek text of the New Testament (1533–1534).It is suggested that Sepúlveda inserted the markings while compiling a list of locations where Codex Vaticanus, in his view, confirmed the textual superiority of the Greek text underlying the Latin Vulgate over Erasmus’ Greek text. Although this idea has been proposed multiple times, it has never been rigorously tested.
My contribution will (1) establish the method for testing this hypothesis, (2) present the results of this investigation, and (3) assess how likely it is that the “distigmai” originated from Sepúlveda’s work.
