Description
The Hebrew Bible refers several times to “Kushites”. Most of these occurrences undoubtedly relate to black people with roots in the area south of Egypt. How are Kushites described in the Hebrew Bible and are there traces of prejudices against them? Data about Kushites from the rest of the ancient Near East can shed new light on that question. Examples will be given of the way in which these texts have been used in Judaism and Christianity. The question of how these texts can have a role in the combat against racism, discrimination and xenophobia will also be addressed.
